Unilever Canada is now Canada's largest commercial purchaser of green electricity.  As of April 1st, we willsource 59,000 MWh of power annually from Bullfrog power – enough energy to power more than 6,000 homes. By “bullfrogpowering” all of our manufacturing facilities and offices in Ontario with locally sourced renewable power we will reduce our carbon dioxide emissions footprint by approximately 7,544 tonnes annually.

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power’s generators inject renewable power onto the electricity grid to match the amount of power our “bullfrogpowered” facilities use. Currently, in Ontario, Bullfrog’s electricity comes from local wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program—instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear. This ensures facilities are emissions free-and have minimal impact on the ecosystem and local community.

Our decision to source energy through Bullfrog Power means that many of the products you buy every day, including those from Becel, Hellmann’s, Knorr, Ben & Jerry’s and Popcicle, will be made in facilities that are “bullfrogpowered” with 100 per cent clean, renewable power. So you can better enjoy your favourite ice creams, spreads and soups knowing that they now have a reduced environmental impact.

Our purchase is in line with the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan.  The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, launched in November 2010, aims to halve the environmental footprint of the manufacture and use of our products by 2020. Choosing Bullfrog Power’s green electricity will help Unilever Canada reach a number of the plan’s energy-related environmental goals.
